Default ASTRO: NGC7814 From Colorado Springs

I have finally got something to contribute... Not the best conditions but
fun none the less. This galaxy is nearly edge on but a lighter dust lane
can be seen in the full size image that I believe is opposite the dark
dust... Is the dark dust the disk on the far side of the galaxy? The
galactic disk is certainly thin.

I'd love to have such conditions. Nothing but clouds this lunar cycle

This one was a failure for me last year. I couldn't get the dust lane
to come out very well. It wasn't much better than that second lane you
caught. You show it can be done! I'll have to give it another shot if
the weather ever breaks.

I found this note at NED:

The galaxy is seen nearly, but not quite, edge on. The parallel
structure in the dust lanes, appearing as the fainter lanes below the
main lane in the print here, shows that we view the thin dust layer
from slightly above the plane on the bottom side of the image here,
seeing part of the plane in silhouette on the near side (bottom)
against the central bulge.

Another note:
Very bright central bulge: 0.5 arcmin x 0.4 arcmin. Outer bulge: 2.0
arcmin x 1.2 arcmin. Strong, thin (0.1 arcmin) dark lane seen edge-on
with secondary layer of dark material.

We have a lot of clouds in October but they are starting early this year.

Didn't help that I lost a couple nights fighting a dropped out screw in
the filter wheel system.

Correct domain name is arvig and it is net not com. Prefix is correct.
Third character is a zero rather than a capital "Oh".

Just looked at the DSS plates. The faint band is much stronger in the
blue image than the red. In both the core is rather round rather than
flat. Some of the NED notes noted this roundness.

I guess I did not read that carefully enough when I looked at it. I did not
see the image they refer but I guess it must have had the fainter dust below
the dark. In that case, it seems the dark dust is in front of the central
area in our line of sight... guess the bright core shines through all that
dust quite well.

PS Are you on the air yet?

Great image Doug. There is even detail in the dust band. I don't remember
seeing that in other images, my images only show a featureless thin band.

Wish it would have been 2.5" sky instead of 3.0", but I'm just happy to have
been able to run the system.

Thanks
