Robert,

Beautiful picture of a beautiful galaxy!!

I watched Alan Chen imaging the same object on 18/19 May at Cherry Springs,
PA using his new 12.5 inch astro-camera and Starlight Express one-shot color
CCD. Later he came over and got me to point my Obsession 20 at the same
object. From that dark-sky site a small group of us were able to clearly see
the spiral arms and their knots, as well as M-101's non-symmetrical shape. I
just wish I had been able to see it in a 30-inch Dob that was also nearby.

Very nice picture, Robert.
Particularly unusual framing - most people who photograph M101
close in rather more on the galaxy. I've just spent a productive hour
or so ploughing around through various on-line catalogues, Uranometria
2000, etc, trying to work out what the object in the bottom-right of
your picture is. Eventually came up with an answer of "NGC 5474", a
companion spiral to M101 (a.k.a. NGC 5457) and strongly distorted by a
previous close pass with M101. Very worthwhile wander through the web.

I posted 5474 here a few days before Robert posted his wide field of
101. Reason so many photograph it close in is it is so big compared to
chip size and focal length it is difficult to do wide field. I'd need a
4" chip to get it with 101 at my focal length.

My version posted on May 6 of 5474 is still on the usenet replayer at:
http://www.usenet-replayer.com/7/1/6/0/1178520617.2.jpg

Not having the seeing of Kitt Peak I can't duplicate Adam Block's photo
at AOP! Mountains are in short supply in northern Minnesota.
