So why do some say they're going to vote Republican
because "we're at war."?

Republican superiority at waging war is as fictitious
as Republican fiscal responsibility.

Because all your examples are pre-McGovern.

Say what you want, the "reforms" the Democratic Party enacted for the 1972
primary campaign fundamentally changed the nature of the party. Old-style
Democratic hawks like Truman, JFK, and LBJ could not have won the
Democratic nomination in the post-1972 party.

As for the space program, JFK still stands as the *only* Democrat to leave
office with the NASA budget significantly larger than it was when he took
office; likewise, Nixon was the *only* Republican to leave with a smaller
NASA budget.

I'm just looking at the current crop of Democrats, versus the current
resident of the White House. I'm not now, and have never been a
Republican, but there's not a single Dem running (with the possible
exception of Joe Biden) who I'd trust with *this* war.

one in the current Administration gave much thought about how to
handle Iraq after the war was won, and did not seriously adjust their
war plans after the UN (predictably) failed to get onboard and after
Turkey blocked troops entering Iraq from the north. Don "we have
enough troops" Rumsfeld, in particular, needs to be shown the door.

the "exit strategy" for Germany and Japan in the spring of 1945?

Perfect? The Post-War occupation of Iraq has been bungled... badly.
We'd have to improve an order of magnitude or two to be anywhere near
'perfect'. I wasn't expecting perfect, but I was expecting better than
this, especially since many of our current problems in Iraq were
foreseen and the current Administration was warned about them... even
from within. The advancing Army and Marines leaving behind unguarded
Iraqi weapons stashes, for example. The disbanding of the Iraqi Police
along with the lack of sufficient U.S. troops to prevent anarchy in
the streets in the first days after reaching Baghdad. The terribly
misjudged condition of Iraq's oil infrastructure. The list goes on.

No comparison. We didn't have 97 casualties in Germany in the four

That's an opinion, not a fact. What's been bungled much more badly is
the reporting of it.

No comparison. We didn't have 97 casualties in Germany in the four
months after VE Day, or the four months after VJ Day in Japan.

So? No one has ever said the war is over. In fact, the President has
said many times that it will last years, perhaps decades.

Indeed so, and Bush and team are to blame. They have allowed the
Democrats and the media to run roughshod over the issue, with the result
that the rebuilding of Iraq is seen as a disaster (it's not), and that
the needed resources to complete the rebuilding of Iraq are being made
unavaialable. Were the US to do the appropriate thing and use Iraqi oil
to fund the rebuilding of Iraq, the Dems would continue to scream about
the war having been all for oil. Consequently the US needs to fund it
itself, adn the Dems are even bitching about that.

The Democrats will go to any length to damage this country so long as
they can blame it ont he Republicans and try to maintain a death grip on
power.
