Shuttle Atlantis Ferry Flight...

How many legs does the 747 take to get back to Kennedy? It's seems like it
might be burning a lot of fuel with a shuttle on its back.

I also have been wondering the same thing.

I did a Google search and just learned that the shuttle made a planned
stop in Nebraska. I wonder when they planned that stop?

Anyways I would guess that there are planes ahead if the 747 and if
they detect any turbulance then they react accordingly.

Do they use commercial airports, or just military ones?

If the stop is for fuel I'd imagine it wood depend on the possibility of
getting such a tall structure to a fuel source.

Also, many airports are so chock full of aircraft mooching about, it would
be a nightmare to get a slot!

Mostly DOD airfields, usually Altus or Sheppard AIUI. The stop in Amarillo
was commercial.

From a decade-old report I co-wrote:
"The carrier can't carry enough fuel to fly nonstop across the
country, so it must land two and sometimes three times per
flight."
The report also has pictures, flight characteristics, etc.
