Default Arecibo telescope to be demolished

David Spain blurted out:

Lo, on the 11/20/2020, David Spain did proclaim ...

Radio astronomers make for bad civil engineers appearently. It was just
a few short months ago that we were reading that new cables would be
installed in an attempt to repair the telescope. Now with an additional
cable
break it has become too unstable to safely repair.

They hired three different consulting firms, and had new cables on order.
The last break was clearly at a load well below spec, which means the other
cables can't be trusted.

Please read more carefully.

Read what? I've seen no cites. Did you post something earlier I may have
missed?

Yes, yes I did. And here it is again:

The Verge carried the same article.

Ars Technica should probably be on your list anyway, as in addition to
articles about Rocket Lab by John Trimmer (the arecibo article author),
there's a regular Rocket Report column by Eric Berger, who has a very
respected record of space reporting.

And your favorite news aggregator could probably help you along to such
articles as
URL:https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/11/famed-arecibo-observatory-to-be-decommissioned-in-wake-of-cable-breaks/
which includes quotations from the National Science Foundation news
release, as well as comments from astronomers.

Sad news:
Arecibo collapsed today.

In other unreported interstellar news....

In an unfortunate twist of fate, a civiliztion orbiting a star only 20
light years from Earth and in the signal path to the M13 Beehive star
cluster in the constellation Hercules, responded to the signal sent
from Arecibo in 1974 but, because of the additional three years of
analysis on their part, too late to be heard by us....
