Default Bruce Dickson thinks Mars Express Water Result is a Conspiracy!

February 23, 2005

"If the so-called ice is below a few cm of dust, then the H would stick
out in the Odyssey gamma-ray data like doggies! Deeper still to 1-2m the
neutron spectrometers would also see ice. Is there a high H signature
over this area in the JPL H maps? If there was the authors of this
nonsense would surely have pointed this out. Note also, dust is porous
and therefor ice will sublimate through it. Many metres of dust is
needed to seal any sub-surface off from the surface. This is fantasy
stuff! If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would say this is a desparate
act by the "water-on Mars" fraternity to obscure the fantastic results
from the OMEGA spectrometer on Mars Express which show no sediments, no
clays, no carbonates but lots of surface alteration and hydrated
sulphates )see the LPSC 2005 abstracts). Mars has had a complex surface
chemistry which is being revealed by both the rovers and Express but its
not a simple water story. IMHO it is all about volcanism and acid
volatiles but that is still in debate. And back to the "frozen ocean",
take Ocams razor and see that this is just another example of the
extraordinary volcanism on Mars."
