Now that says it was illuminated at the time of intercept, which I
thought would be the case, but James Oberg said the satellite spotting
program he used showed it in shadow.

I ran it through heavens-above and it was not listed as
a visible satellite -- perhaps it was too dim.

According to the PDF, around 5th magnitude.
When I ran it up on Redshift, the sky was just showing the first hints
of dawn, so I was surprised it wouldn't be visible, given its altitude
