In fact, the more you buy the more consumption tax you pay. That makes it less regressive than a poll tax. But it is still worse than a progressive income tax, which is presumably the standard of comparison being used. One leading example of a proposed consumption tax is the Fair Tax, which does not tax purchases up to the poverty line. You only pay tax on purchases in excess of the poverty line and everyone pays the same rate. Hence the name, FAIR Tax. The rich don't have to buy things. They fly in private jets owned by their companies. Are driven in cars owned by their companies. Live in mansions owned by their companies. The tax still gets paid on the initial purchase of said items. If a company wishes to then offer those as perks to a CEO, so be it. Learn about your own proposals. Business purchases are specifically excluded from fair tax. As are second hand goods. No fair tax here. But you, as an honest citizen are paying their share. No, they would pay for new goods that they consume. If they consume more, they pay more. |

Couldn't resist, particularly as I just watched Rogue One the other day... I'm not claiming that humans are infallible, but they can add some abilities that machines lack; the two together can make a very powerful team. That's just plain silly, because automated systems will continue to be far more limited than human beings. So it *will* be possible for criminals to commit assassination by putting sufficiently realistic dummies... or fresh corpses... in front of moving cars, if no possibility of an override exists. Machines aren't at the point that they can "deserve" trust. But some machines, in some environments, soon will be. And that includes cars. There's really no dispute that a fully automated car transport system will reduce traffic fatalities by 90% or more. Autonomous cars (which are currently just semi-autonomous) are already less limited than humans, and getting less so all the time. We will no more allow a human to override an automated car (in the near future) than we allow a passenger on an airplane to override the pilot. Are there realistic situations where allowing a passenger to do that would save a flight? Of course. But allowing such intervention would result in far more flights being lost. Similarly, the only way to create a truly safe surface traffic system is to remove direct control from the passengers in the car. |

Climate change could cause mass exodus by mid century

Scorching temperatures brought on by climate change could leave large swaths of the Middle East and North Africa uninhabitable by the middle of this century, a new study predicts. Researchers at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and The Cyprus Institute in Nicosia crunched the numbers and found that this area, a "climate change hotspot" where days of extreme heat have doubled since 1970, could soon be plagued by weather so brutal that it triggers a "climate exodus." On the hottest of days, temperatures in North Africa and the Middle East can reach highs of around 109 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the findings.. But that figure could soar to 114 degrees by 2050, and 122 degrees by 2100 -- extremes the researchers say could have "important consequences for human health and society." Study lead author Jos Lelieveld, director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and a professor at The Cyprus Institute, says the change in climate could jeopardize the very existence of the area's 500 million inhabitants. "Prolonged heat waves and desert dust storms can render some regions uninhabitable, which will surely contribute to the pressure to migrate," Lelieveld said in a statement. The numbers you quote as disasterous are the normal in Phoenix today. |

These are conditions that occur around the Persian Gulf and in some parts of the Indian subcontinent. |

Te so called "hiatus" in global warming has now been identified as a result of new, sea temperature measuring devices not matching previous means. Shipping was previously responsible for much of the recording of sea temperatures. Researchers have been able to show that corrected figures, using three different climate models, iron out the former "imagined" pause. The re-distribution of 500 million "North Africans" to more northerly or southerly latitudes will rapidly cause "Western civilization" to collapse. Those countries north of the Mediterranean will have to erect impenetrable sea defenses and watch tens of millions die offshore. The whole arrangement will probably have to be left to AI controlled weaponry. There is no guarantee that the Northern Med's coastal nations will remain habitable. Israel and Turkey will be completely overrun by millions of starving human beings as Africans move north by the only route left open to them.. Meanwhile, terrorism on an unprecedented scale will make life hardly worth living for hundreds of millions of Europeans. The timescale will perfectly match massive unemployment as AI and robotics make most jobs totally obsolete. Thanks be god Trump is in charge of the global climate at this desperate hour of need! Amen! We are saved! Amen! Praise the Lord Trump for having the wisdom of Solomon! Amen! At the mental age of three and the world's absolute worst, spoilt brat! |
