Default Elongation of the Moon from the Sun

In what direction is the elongation of the Moon from the Sun measured?
What is the elongation at first quarter, for example, 90 degrees or
270? I would have thought 90 degrees but I've had reason to believe
recently trhat it might be 270.

Michael.

Since the Moon's orbit takes it from west to east, first quarter is 90
degrees.
