No carry on bags on this flight. Was there even room for a baggage
hold below the passenger deck or was it all fuel?

Very little in the way of amenities on this bird. Lucky there was a toilet!

....Actually, I can see the "logic" behind the lack of carry-ons:

"Sir, you're flying a Mach-2.5 plane from DC to Chicago. You can
complete your business and get back to the office before end of
business day. You don't *need* a carry-on for overnight!"

Being able to get on a plane without all those people shleping all
their bags on, might just be worth the supersonic surcharge (smile).
Imagine . . . walk in . . . sit down . . push back . . . all in under
10 minutes . . . it's what dreams are made of!!!! (smiling even more)

Blue skies . . .

It looks like a Myasishchev M-50:

Speaking of which, how would you like to try a RATO launch in this thing?:

I'd say we are talking Hero Of The Soviet Union Medal territory here. :-D

On the other hand, given the B-58's safety record, you might need an
escape capsule.

.... and then the cell phones kick on, and you spend the next hour
flanked by some dewey-eyed moron talking baby talk with his main squeze
and some red-faced manager type screaming at his underlings.

Bleah.

Convair suggested the same for the B-58. I do not, however, recall
anything similar for the B-70 or B-1.
