An interesting couple of articles on El Reg the last couple of days.
The first was about a suggestion that it would be better to send women
to Mars because they will require fewer consumables:

The second is a report that the Sun's possibly entering a Maunder
Minimum means it is now more dangerous to go to Mars. It also
includes a quote showing the marked difference in exposure times
between men and women to hit the 3% risk of dying from cancer limit:

For MARS cutting travel time dramatically not only saves consumables, cuts health risks of deep space, cuts the risks of mechanical breakdowns, it makes the entire trip easier and safer.

You should love this as it may well require a nuclear power source as a solution.

Anyway, cutting travel time and increasing to orbit abilities i.e lower costs are some of the keys to the solar system.

Or improved shielding could help but again that would require extra work and expense. Personally I think it best to send McCall (as Xnaut) to Mars in an oversized cola can 'slow boat to China' such that it is pretty much Spam in a can on arrival in orbit of Mars.

the ether awaits.........................Trig
