Default Progress M-55 docking to the International Space Station

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
about transport cargo vehicle Progress M-55 docking to the
International Space Station

December 23, 2005. Korolev, Moscow Area.

Russian cargo vehicle Progress M-55 launched on December 21, 2005 from
Baikonur cosmodrome after an autonomous two-day flight in near-earth orbit
docked to the International Space Station (ISS).
The vehicle approached the docking port of the ISS Russian Segment
compartment/module Pirs. The berthing to the Station port occurred at 22:46
Moscow time. The vehicle rendezvous with the Station, its flyby and docking
were performed in the automatic mode.
The ISS Expedition 12 crew (ISS-12) consisting of Russian cosmonaut Valery
Tokarev (flight engineer of Yu.A. Gagarin CTC) and American astronaut
William McArthur (commander, NASA) monitored the rendezvous and docking
processes onboard the station.
The ISS-12 crew will have to accommodate the delivered cargoes onboard the
station, provide the transfer of the waste materials and equipment to the
vehicle.
The vehicles and Station modules onboard systems operate in a design mode.
The ISS Russian Segment flight control is provided by Lead Operational
Control Team of MCC-M in interaction with the US Mission Control Center in
Houston (MCC-H). At MCC-M the flight is directed by V.A. Soloviev,
Vice-President, Deputy General Designer of RSC Energia, pilot-cosmonaut.
The final flight operations during the vehicle rendezvous and docking to the
station were conducted under control of N.N. Sevastiyanov, President,
General Designer of RSC Energia, who worked at the Mission Control Center in
Moscow (MCC-M).
During these operations MCC-M was attended by V.A. Grin, co-chairmen of the
State Board, responsible representatives of Roscosmos, NASA, S.P. Korolev
RSC Energia, allied enterprises and organizations participating in the
manufacturing, processing and launch of the Progress vehicles, as well as
control of the ISS RS.
Progress M-5 delivered ~ 2.5 tons of various cargoes to the station. Among
them were propellant to resupply the ISS propulsion system, oxygen, air,
potable water, food products, payloads to conduct experiments under programs
of the Russian Academy of Sciences, European Space Agency and Japan. The
following was also delivered to the Station: equipment to maintain the
serviceability of its onboard systems, flight-data files, parcels and new
year presents for the crew. One hundred and ninety one kilograms of cargo
were designed for the US OS.

For reference:
The ISS Orbital Complex of about 191.7 t performs a near-orbit flight with
the following parameters: maximum altitude of 374.0 km, minimum altitude of
344.7 km, period of revolution of 91.4 min.
The Russian Segment of the Complex is made up of Functional Cargo Module
Zarya, Service Module Zvezda, docking module Pirs, transport vehicles Soyuz
TMA-7, Progress M-54 and Progress M-55. The US On-Orbit Segment is made up
of Modules Unity and Destiny, airlock Quest and a multi-link truss structure
with deployed solar arrays. In this case the use of resources available
onboard the Progress M-54 vehicle will be continued to resupply the oxygen
reserve onboard the Station and maintain its orbit.
