Q: Calculating the Julian day for a wide range of dates
The SOFA routine cal2jd() only calculates the Julian day number for dates back to year -4800. Does anyone here know of an algorithm that goes back substantially farther?
The reason why I ask is that the JPL DE431 ephemeris is valid for dates from August 15, -13,200 to March 15, 17,191. To use the full range, I need to be able to calculate Julian dates back to year -13,200. Going ahead doesn't seem to be a problem; cal2jd() gives me a JD of 8000016.5 for March 15, 17,191, which agrees with the JD in the header.431_527 file. Thanks for your help. --- Brian |
