NASA Shared Services Center Debut
Ladies and Gentlemen - This ng normally (on its better days) is oriented towards the technical side of NASA, but I wanted to ask about a non-technical subject. NASA has announced plans to open what amounts to a new NASA center - the Shared Services Center. Anything could be a good idea but it inevitably will be discolored by the political maneuverings associated with government projects. Perhaps I should get my opinions out quickly, before the thread descends into vitrol and accusations! The idea of opening a new center to do this is nonsense - the things that could be centralized are the things that could be put anywhere. Better to use some space on an existing Center or at Headquarters. Money spent on acquiring land and buildings could be better spent on fixing the hardware. People will be relocated, facilities will be established. Many of the costs would be mitigated if the NSSC was put at an existing Center. Unfortunatly, this appears to be a "done deal" and now we will see the influential Senators fighting over the spoils. Sigh.
