HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Continuing to collect World Class Science

DAILY REPORT****** #4856

PERIOD COVERED: 5am May 29 - 5am June 1, 2009 (DOY
149/0900z-152/0900z)

OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED

ACS 11809

ACS CEB-R Optimization Iteration 1

During the early weeks of SMOV the ACS-R team will work to find the
best parameters for CEB-R and the WFC CCD operations before continuing
with the normal SMOV activities and eventually enable science
operations. This optimization needs to be done in an iteratively way.
The plan is to have up to eight iterations spread out through SMOV
week 2-4. A core-set of observations aimed to assess the performance
of the CCDs and to check the relative phasing between the internal
ASIC signal and the incoming video signal will be repeated in all
iterations. In any given iteration a specific test will be run to
determine the best value for a given parameter. Data collected in each
iteration will be quickly analyzed and if needed, new parameters will
be uploaded in real time before the following iteration. The data will
consist of a mix of normal data (bias, flat, EPER, darks) and O-mode
data. In order to facilitate the program implementation, data
collection and reduction, the program will be implemented in eight
different proposals. 11809 covers the fist iteration and it executes
all the tests.

FGS 11458

Optimizing FGS2R2 Performance with the AMA

Ths proposal satisfies SMOV4 AD OTA/FGSS-054. S-curves with PUPIL and
F583W will be obtained at selected locations within the FGS2R2 FOV
during SMOV4. These data will be will be used to adjust the AMA so as
to align the HST pupil onto the interferometer's Koesters prisms. The
final AMA position will be set to produce an acceptable set of
S-curves across the FGS2R2 FOV. The AMA will be adjusted using
CCL/instructions from the ground. It is intended that this proposal
executes during the SMOV4 BEA and will require several (on the order
of 4) iterations to achieve optimal interferometric performance.

WFC3 11454

Activation Test

This program (WFC3 SMOV program WFC3-01) verifies that WFC3 is in the
same condition after release from the Shuttle as during the Functional
Test (FT), which was conducted with HST in the Shuttle?s payload bay.
This analog test will be implemented in stored commanding that will be
generated from a Phase II proposal, whereas the in-bay FT was run with
real-time CCLs.

The purpose of the FT was to demonstrate that WFC3 is viable for
scientific research. This was accomplished by demonstrating that WFC3
can be commanded to the nominal scientific operating state and can
carry out nominal scientific operations of the UVIS and IR channels,
including operation of the thermoelectric coolers (TECs), corrector
and focus mechanisms, UVIS shutter, SOFA and FSM filter wheels,
detectors, and Control Section (CS). Only one Side of the CS is
verified.

This test is compatible with execution during the post-FT,
Safe-Protect period. Operability of the TECs is not demonstrated in
this test, but is demonstrated in the SMOV Detector & TEC activation
programs, WFC3-04 and WFC3-05.

ACS 11373

SBC Dark Current Measurement

This takes a series of SBC dark measurements over a continuous period
of about 6 hours (4 orbits). The aim is to collect dark images during
an extended SBC on-time. Earlier measurements indicate that the dark
current increases with SBC on-time and may also be increasing with
overall SBC use. The 6-hour time matches the longest time used by any
observer. As with all SBC observations this needs continuous SAA free
time.

ACS/SBC 11372

SBC UV Contamination Check

ACS/SBC throughput in the far-UV will be monitored during the bright
earth avoidance period through use of two non-BEA visits, each of one
orbit separated by one week allowing observations of NGC 6681. A
waiver for two non-BEA orbits during BEA was previously granted.
Exposures will be taken in PR110L, F115LP, F125LP, F140LP, F150LP and
F165LP as in recent UV Monitor program observations. These results
will be one of the activities determining if the BEA can be ended. A
third visit just after BEA ends will repeat the above monitoring and
include one orbit with F122M. ON HOLD visits 4 and 5 would substitute
for 1 and 2 if SM4 is delayed.

ACS 11370

SBC MAMA Recovery

Procedure normally used when ACS MAMA anomalously shuts down. We will
also use it during SM4 following the planned shutdown. Recovery
procedure is designed to carefully bring the MAMA back to operating
condition while watching for possible problems. The final step is to
do a fold analysis which gives detailed information about how well the
instrument is performing.

COS 11355

COS NUV Initial On-Orbit Turn-On and Recovery after Anomalous
Shutdown

This proposal is designed for the initial turn-on of the COS NUV MAMA
detector. The same procedure may later be used to recover the detector
after an anomalous shutdown. Anomalous shutdowns can occur as a result
of bright object violations which trigger the Bright Scene Detection
or Software Global Monitor. Anomalous shutdowns can also occur as a
result of MAMA hardware problems. The Initial MAMA turn-on consists of
three tests: a signal processing electronics check; a slow high
voltage ramp-up to an intermediate voltage; and a slow high voltage
ramp-up to the full operating voltage. During each of the two high
voltage ramp-ups, diagnostics are performed during a dark time-tag
exposure. The turn-on is followed by a MAMA Fold Analysis Test. The
complete sequence is contained in visits 1 through 4. If a second
execution is required during cycle 17, visits 5 through 8 will be run
and another proposal prepared for possible future occurrences.

STIS4 11349

Mechanism Mini-Functional

Move mechanisms, except the corrector, through the full range of
previous on-orbit motion to redistribute lubricant and verify
operability. Wait at least one minute after each move to allow
telemetry to update so moves can be verified. Supports Activity
STIS-04

STIS 11348

Science Data Buffer Check with Self-Test

The STIS Science Buffer RAM is checked for bit flips during SAA
passages. This is followed by a Control Section (CS) self-test
consisting of writing/reading a specified bit pattern from each memory
location in Buffer RAM. The CS Buffer RAM self-test as well as the bit
flip tests are all done with the CS in Operate. Supports Activity
STIS-03
