NASA's sad, pathetic throwback to Apollo
This would be hilarious, if it weren't so sad. None of this surprises me.
With a guy like Obama in-charge. He knows as much and appreciates as much about science as a cow. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/05/24/nas...ex.html?hpt=C1 |

While an Apollo-like craft probably is better suited to sending men to Mars, however, a fully-reusable development from the Shuttle probably would make good sense as a way to bring crew more economically to the ISS. (That the ISS doesn't seem to be anything but a white elephant, of course, casts a bit of a pall on the whole proceedings, but is irrelevant if one is going to crew it anyways.) John Savard |

The Republican Party may have a few visible nutcases, but the majority of its members have more sense than that. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be preventing them from advancing one of said nutcases to be their next candidate for President. Which just makes them all the more culpable. John Savard |

Dubya appointed one of his dodgy minions to censor NASA research and add the word "Theory" to all occurrences of "Big Bang", "Evolution" and "AGW". It was rather amusing when the guy was exposed as a liar with a fake CV and zero credibility. Republicans in the USA cosy up to the religious right and are very definitely the anti-science party of wilful ignorance and superstition. I bet the ones so sure that they would be raptured last Saturday are now wondering how they will pay next months credit card bill. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be preventing them from advancing one of said nutcases to be their next candidate for President. Which just makes them all the more culpable. With any luck it will keep them out of office. There is still a big problem with around 33% of the US population believing that the Bible is literally the absolute truth and trying to bend scientific evidence to fit their peculiar misreading of it. eg Gallup Poll http://www.gallup.com/poll/27682/One...ally-True.aspx Regards, Martin Brown |

You mean it was intended for interplanetary flight, but somehow couldn't actually manage that because of manufacturing defects? Interesting. -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN |

The Shuttle did what it was designed for. But obviously it wouldn't work if one tried to use it for things it wasn't designed for. The Shuttle isn't able to land on the Moon. So trying to use the Shuttle _as a starting point_ when one wishes to build a craft that can land on the Moon or Mars is building on something that doesn't work for those purposes. Not because of a flaw, but because it is the wrong starting point. John Savard |
