....something important happened. Anyone remember what it was?

This hit song from 1965, before it happened, may help to remind you...

Ah, I see that one TV network ascribed some significance to this anniversary...

And, of course, the films taken at the time are also on YouTube:

Be a good universal date to count the years from instead of that baby Jesus
crap, Hebrew crap, Chinese crap, Julian date crap, or any other local
method.

Of course if 1969 AD is Year Zero it won't be 45 YZ until Perihelion,
although the US Navy isn't sure when that is.

Many people remember what it was. It happened on a monday, i. e. on
a moon-day.

Be a good universal date to count the years from.

A few other possibilities:

12-21-1620
4-19-1775
7-4-1776
10-19-1781
3-4-1789
1-1-1863
12-17-1903
1-15-1929
1-8-1935
9-5-1940
7-16-1945
9-2-1945
10-4-1957
4-12-1961
4-17-1964
1-15-1967
1-1-1970
4-18-1975
8-12-1981
1-24-1984
8-23-1991
9-14-1994

....or really just any random date.

We may very soon [according to the media] have a date of first discovery of non-human intelligent life. Given the quick-march towards AI and robotic replacement of *all* repetitive and rule based employment we may shortly have far more time on our hands to speculate on alternative dating systems. My own hope is that religion will be cured overnight with a cheap pill. Leaving the problem of BC/AD of only very limited, academic interest.

It isn't just the Roman myth, it's the Chinese year of the animal, the
Islamic lunar calendar of 354/355 days as year and who knows how many
others. Putting a man on the Moon is an historical event they can ALL relate
to.

Involuntary administration would violate the First Amendment. And people who
believed in a religion would see no reason to seek a cure.

Of course, if a pill were developed that increased human intelligence, a cure for
at least the more harmful forms of religion might be a side effect. However,
human motivational structures are complex, and so some people, rather than being
moved to behave rationally, might just end up as more effective terrorists by such
a treatment.
