Many planets (around 400) are now known to exist in other solar systems, but
nearly all are giants similar to Jupiter or larger. Most have been found by
the "doppler wobble" method or by small dips in light caused by planetary
transits. A few have been found by microlensing and a very small number by
direct imaging as points of light.

There is no "Hubble 2", it's still under construction on Earth (the James
Webb Space Telescope).

Some giant planets appear to have been detected optically or in infrared,
orbiting around some young A-type stars, but they are seen as spots of
light, not as "excellent images" and they are not Earthlike.

I would need to check for details but I think there have been some
detections of "superEarths" from microlensing and possibly from planetary
transit observations. That is, the planets found appear to have masses only
a few times that of Earth (e.g., about 5-10 times)and thus may be rocky
rather than gaseous. Again, none of these yielded an image, only an
"existence" result.

There are various plans for a large and fairly expensive project to find
terrestrial planets that involve space instruments (The NASA Terrestrial
Planet Finder and the European Darwin Project) but economic problems mean
these are either abandoned or postponed indefinitely while money is poured
into various wars and bailouts of banks, General Motors, etc.

There are some efforts aimed at examining known transiting giant planets for
the presence of moons that might be Earthlike in size. It's a bit technical
to describe, but would not produce an image, and as far as I know none have
yet been found.

In any case, if it's "the size of Jupiter" it won't be Earthlike.

So your friend is wrong. Get him to reveal the source of his information.

No. I love the holiday season.

Ya, welll..... I've been too easy on the kooks lately and
I thought they needed some shaking up.

Since I have brought my show to alt.astronomy, you'll

That is my goal.

If there were pix available you'd see them in newspapers, on
TV, all over the internet.

I don't get any broadcast TV and don't read the papers, but
figured I would have heard about it somewhere if it were true.
The last time I looked into it was years ago and scientists were
trying to determine how many planets the closest stars *might*
have by studying the wobble of the star due to the gravitational
influence of possible planets. AFAIK it hasn't gone any farther
than that yet...or at least not much.

There's also the occultation technique - detecting when a planet passes
in front of the star and even when the star passes in front of a planet.
Using the spectrum shift during an orbit, and the orbital period,
scientists can calculate mass/density of the planet.

I believe there have now been some measurements, through spectography,
of atmospheric constituents of extrasolar planets.

Catalog of extrasolar planets:

P.S: I've been enjoying being a member of The Planetary Society. Being
able to contribute to the building of a private lightsail spacecraft has
the little ten-year-old that still lives inside me very excited. Some
societies like to talk about the future. These guys do stuff to arrange
it.

Any cheapskate publication that refers to "scientists" is bull****ting,
anthonybucklandALLspam.

Yes, but the kind of bull****ters who will actually discover extrasolar
planets:

I'll take an ounce of their bull**** over a ton of your cynicism any day

Then you are a fool. I have the first extrasolar planet, discovered in
1987. By me.

Default Saul's indisposed at the moment.

Saul's wife caught him cheating, so she beat him with his telescope.
Saul got away on his tricycle but passed out and fell into a wash.

There are now more than 400 known exoplanets. They weren't discovered
with direct photography though.

There is no Hubble 2, just the original Hubble.

There are photographs of just a few of them now, maybe 3 out of the 400
known. Moreover, they are hardly "excellent" pictures, they are just
dots in noisy photographs that moved after a time lapse. I think
somebody may have already posted links for you.

Something the size of Jupiter can't be anything like Earth. The upper
limit of rocky planets is believed to be about 5 Earth masses. Jupiter
is more like 300 Earth masses.

We do have a resolved (sort of) image of the star Betelgeuse and the
clouds of gas surrounding it.
