but
sadly the people are stupid to realize this.


Disagreed. I think people are smart enough to realise that the probability
of an asteroid causing major damage to them/their family/their friends/their
home in their lifetime is really small. Not zero, but not enough to be
overly worried about. There are many more likely causes of destruction; they
should be addressed first.
