Default Two refractors...your comments needed.

Why is this refractor $128.00 more than the Orion 80ED, and not even
being an "apo"?

Which would you prefer?

Geez, I hope that link works:-)

The Stellarvue is built in the US and has first rate construction. The
one at that website has a JMI Crayford focuser, adding $200 to the
price. See:

I have the Nighthawk (the Blackhawk without the upgraded focuser). I
like it fine.

There are reviews at Cloudy Nights:

Kind of difficult to say. The SV is an achromat, so it going to have
significant false color. The ED-80 seems to be an APO but the darn thing is
pretty big for an 80mm scope, being built on th 100mm F6 OTA...

If you could find someone to sell you the ED80 lens in the Blackhawk tube
you'd really have something.

Refractors go through an evolution. Some of their price is based on
quality, but sometimes it's just what they could charge at the time
and they haven't changed it. For instance, an 80mm fast achro
from Celestron 15 years ago would have been around $300. Now, it's
$150. Some places used to charge $700 for well made but
conventionally-lensed 100mm achros. They are unlikely to sell
many of those now. An apo has to be pretty bad to be inferior to
an achromat of f.l. f5-8 so unless you absolutely can't get by
with a Chinese focuser, I'd get the ED-apo.

Or look at the Celestron version of the 80ED-the tube is supposed to
be at teh 80mm size instead of oversize.
Good luck,
kowen
