Default CFI: Canonical List of Sci-Fi "Real" Astronauts

....After exchanging a couple of e-mails with Mark Wade over an
addition I think needs to be made to the "Phantom Astronauts" page on
EA, I've suddenly come up with an idea for a "Canonical List" of said
Phantoms. However, since most of my time these days is spent at my
60+hour/week job, I've decided to put out a Call For Input here on the
group to see what can be dredged up. Here's the criteria:

1) As we're looking at fictional characters from "real" history, each
Phantom Astronaut must have had his/her/its career rooted in an AH
timeline where history doesn't deviate too drastically. Think how
Baxter's characters in _Voyage_, or Majors Nelson and Healey existed
in a world that wasn't that different from ours. Ergo, Warren "I'm A
Limey Egotistical ****wit!" Ellis' _Ministry Of Space_ characters
wouldn't count, but I would consider the crew of the Scorpio I, and
quite possibly four key members of the Richards Rocket Group.

2) Characters can come from TV, film, books, comics or even the
theater.

3) We're shooting for relatively well to moderately known characters.
The obscure ones we might consider, depending on background.

4) The time frame we're looking at is from 1957 up through whatever
years "The Cape" would have covered (*). Again, as close to OTL as
possible.

(*) Hmm. Must remember to put a request for a posting of that series
up on one of the binary groups :-P

5) Finally, some background about each PA's career should be included,
as well as a link to a photo if available.

....Off the top of my head, here's who come to mind as being
candidates:

Jose Jimenez

"Major Matt Mason"
Major Matt Mason
Sgt. Storm
Lt. Doug Davis

"I Dream Of Jeannie"
Major Anthony Nelson
Major Roger Healey

I didn't see this below:

Shaun Geoffry, son of Captain John Christopher.

We don't know much abuot Mr. Geoffry other than he lead the historic first
Earth-Saturn Mission in the Star Trek Time line.

Given he wasn't conceived in 1969 though, his birth may put him outside of
your required timeline.

In the novel "Cyborg," Colonel Steve Austin was not commander of Apollo 18. He
was backup LM pilot for Apollo 17, and went to the moon because the prime
conveniently broke his arm a few weeks before launch.

No word on what Jack Schmitt thought of this plot device.

Let's see, here are a few that likely "miss"; via your rule # 1
(but history may yet redeem us)

Planet of the Apes series
==================
Planet of the Apes (1968 version)
Cmdr. George Taylor
Astronaut Dodge
Astronaut Landon
Astronaut Stewart (dies during 6 month voyage)

Beneath Planet of the Apes (1970)
Capt. Maddox (dies at crash landing site)
Astronaut Brent

Planet of the Apes (2001 version)
Captain Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg's character)

Star Trek series
(all series and movies)
================
Star Trek Voyager (episode "One Small Step")
Lt. John Kelly (Ares IV at Mars)
http://www.startrek.com/startrek/vie...de/108170.html

Star Trek - Original Series - (episode Tomorrow is Yesterday)
Captain John Christopher (accidental 1960s astronaut)

===========================================
These are much closer for consideration, but likely still miss on rule # 1:
James Bond "007" series of movies

Moonraker (1979)
James Bond (of course)
Dr. Holly Goodhead
Colonel Scott

I have not even looked into the related 1960 spy series copies
(Matt Helm, Secret Agent Man, I, Spy, etc.)

Here's the crew of the Endeavour from "Encounter with Tiber".

Lori Kirsten, commander
Henry Janesh, pilot
Chris Terence, mission specialist 1
Dirk Rodriguez, mission specialist
Sharon Goldman, mission specialist
Harold Spearman, mission specialist
J T Murphy, mission specialist

Do Frank Poole and David Bowman qualify?

Lt. Col. Joseph Faulk, U.S. Marines, from Jeff Sutton's "Apollo at Go".

The astronauts in Jacob Hay & John M.Keshishian's "Death Of A Cosmonaut"
(I must buy a copy !)

John Mason and Larry Carter from Wernher von Braun's "First Men to the
Moon" (a bit obscure, but I found it on Saturday! My edition doesn't
have these pictures, though http://sun3.lib.uci.edu/~jsisson/fmtm.htm)

Plus all the various others who flew in space in the film, although they
may not be classed as "astronauts" in context.

The three in suspended animation were Hunter, Whitehead & Kaminski.

....I've really been handwringing about this one, and right now I have
to say no. Simply because I'm trying to keep this in "reality"
perspective. "2001" was far beyond what really happened, and in
retrospect far above what we really could have achieved had we gone
that route, at least within that time frame.

Lt. Col. Joseph Faulk, U.S. Marines, from Jeff Sutton's "Apollo at Go".
