This is the western part of the Veil Nebula which is a large supernova remnant. Light from the original supernova likely reached Earth over 5,000 years ago. Blasted out in the cataclysmic event, the interstellar shock wave plows through space sweeping up and exciting interstellar material to give is this picture. https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1909/veilXie.jpg Most people use an OIII (or another filter) when viewing this object visually because it renders the wispiness much easier to see, but without any filter, you will see that the bright star in the field, 52 cyg (aka ADS 14259), is a beautiful double star. This pair has a separation of 6.4" and the primary is mag 4.2 and the secondary is mag 9,5. At a distance of about 210 light-years, this double-star sits well in front of this part of Veil Nebula (aka The Witch’s Broom), which is about 1470 light-years away. Paul A |
