A tribute to NASA/Harvard-Smithsonian ADS and Guenther Eichorn
One of things that makes modern amateur astronomy interesting is easy
online access to thousands of professional journal articles through the NASA/Harvard-Smithsonian Abstract Data Service (ADS) - http://www.adsabs.harvard.edu/ and the Simbad database - http://simbad.harvard.edu/sim-fid.pl The ADS is a model of open distribution of scientific knowledge - one that other disciplines would do well to follow. Like some modern-day Zenodotus or Hypatia building a modern day version of the Great-Library-At-Alexandria, Dr. Guenther Eichorn with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and NASA's Astrophysics Data System has spent most of his adult career building and maintaining the 4.7 million record NASA ADS system indexing journal artices on Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and ArXiv e-prints. We sometimes forget how dependent the advancement of science is on good libraries. In an April 2006 Slacker Astronomy Podcast, Aaron Price interviewed Dr. Eichorn. As Aaron's podcast summary aptly notes, "Every astronomical researcher should buy Dr. Eichorn a beer at least once in their life." That extends to amateurs who want to extend their enjoyment of specific objects by supplementing their activities by reviewing journal articles. - Canopus56 Price, Aaron. 4/11/2006. In an April 2006 Slacker Astronomy Podcast, Aaron Price interviewed Dr. Eichorn. As Aaron's podcast summary aptly notes, "Every astronomical researcher should buy Dr. Eichorn a beer at least once in their life." I second this opinion, and will gladly do so the next time I see Dr. Eichorn at a meeting. Michael Richmond |
