Washington Post claims that Earth Solar System is Flat!!
See Washington Post article by Guy Gugliotta on the planetoid Sedna, at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2005Feb13.html For a reality check, see Keith Cowing's comments at "NASA Watch" http://www.nasawatch.com/archives/20...01_f.html#more |

Looks like the science editor at WP needs a little education. There's a, somewhat wimpy, correction to the article there now. "Correction to This Article A Feb. 14 article about the planet/planetoid Sedna said that all planets orbit the sun in a circle and all planets are on a similar plane. Planetary orbits are nearly circular but slightly elliptical. Pluto's orbit is inclined 17 degrees, but scientists disagree about whether Pluto is a planet. Mercury's orbit is inclined 7 degrees." |

Astro 101
When the solar system was formed, the vast area was filled with gas and dust, but with a rotation and a spin. 99% of the mass from the solar system is made up from the Sun and the rest the planet. Trying to paint a picture. As this dust cloud spin matter is collected and finaly one day the concentration of the gases at the center develope into a a star. So all the plant are on the same rotation (axis) the sun is on. |

If your definition is +/- XX degrees, then maybe... there's been a lot of interaction from the time the solar system was born to now for things to get shaken up a little. Dave |

It's NOT nice to uncover other people's mistake.
As for the Solar System is flat. Well... We still use flat maps to describe the Earth and even the solar system. As for on how the Solar System is born. Excuse me, but how do one knows on how the Solar System was born? Was one present during creation? Besides, many members of the Solar System family probably are adopted anyway. Which would explain on why some members behaved erratic (Pluto?), or might be even behaved too organized (Moon?). |
