Default Lm Att hold

when armstrong landed he used the ATT hold mode in the LM.
and then descent was by a switch that altered the descent rate by a
fixed amount,

was this switched used only in att hold, ie was the throttle comletly
over ridden
if so was there an alternative to the att hold, ie could the lm land
without it
