Just saw TiPS
It's an awesome sight.
I saw it about one hour before sunrise, using a six inch, f/8 reflector with an eyepiece that gives a half-degree field of view. The two subsatellites appear to be flying parallel, holding the 4 kilometer tether at a right angle to the orbital path. The subsats are about a quarter of a degree apart. The tether wasn't visible as a sharp line, at least not to my eyes. It looked like a silver-blue luminescene, almost like a fluorescent light without the glass tube. It was surprisingly bright. If you've got a telescope, it's definitely worth the time needed to catch it. --Bill Thompson |
