However since it has been resurrected it's Ply a dees rhyming with Hyades in UK English. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/de...glish/pleiades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJa5sok-TlU The Greeks and Americans are right, the Oxford Dictionary wrong. The Oxford Dictionary is the ultimate reference for the English language. It gives both pronunciations and just as in words like schedule does not judge which version is better. How do you pronounce Pythagoras, in Samos, where he lived it's pronounced Pith ag or ass. English pronunciation of foreign derived words differs between North America and the British Isles. Some agree with the original derivation language, some don't. It's about 50/50 whichever side of the Atlantic you investigate. But dictionaries follow usages they do not force it. Each pronunciation is correct for it's location. You should be less combative. It would help your blood pressure. |

On both sides of the Atlantic we agree that "ei" is /generally/ pronounced as a long "a." Witness "rein," "seine," "feign," "deign," "heinous," "neigh," et al. I find it strange as well but I never met anybody in the UK who used the other pronunciation. Also I would have thought the German descended US citizens would have held on to the "ei" equals eye pronunciation. As one of my German teaches always said "Never say die, say dee". On my first visit to the USA I was surprised by many of the differences you don't see in films and TV programmes. "Erbs" instead of Herbs was the most surprising. |
