I don't normally use the newsgroups. Do you know if there is a
uk.sci.astronomy group on yahoo? I suppose I could look, but I thought a few
others might be interested as well.

Thank You,
Lee

There isn't. If you want one, why not start one?

However, you may find that those of us who use USENET in preference to
what are essentially mailing lists and message boards do so for a reason
(although you may appeal to those who labour under the misconception
that USENET is "Google groups".

Best,
Stephen

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/telescopesuk/messages/

This was a parallel Yahoo group which seems to have run out of oxygen.

I wonder what's the problem with using UseNet anyway ? There are groups
that have their own resource files secreted away - like our FAQ, or like
rec, crafts.metalworking has what they call a drop box for plans and
pictures of projects - far more space than the likes of Yahoo provide.

With one difference: The ability to easily park relevant images to a
post without the need to own a website. Though this is changing with
image storage systems like Photobucket popping up. (Provided you don't
mind having no control over the surrounding advertising material) But
this is also becoming irritating on all newsgroup and forum space
providers.

Isn't alt.binaries.pictures.astro the place for discussions about
pictures? There's also an alt.binaries.astronomy group but I don't know
of an ISP that carries it and it's apparently full of spam and porn.

Serves them right for sending their posts via Air Mail.

The trouble with any of the binary hierarchies (that your ISP is
prepared to support) is retention - Zen Internet, who we use, don't
retain binaries for more than about three days, Google Groups AFAIK
doesn't retain any.

So there would be no depository.

If anyone thinks there is mileage in it, I'm happy to utilise some of
the Astronomy Centre space for UKSA "dropbox"

Hadn't thought of that. Thanks.
I shall restrain myself from expressing an opinion about google :-) but
do Yahoo groups retain stuff?
A.b.p.a. has a mirror at http://www.mysky.org/mysky/ but it doesn't
get everything.

Yahoo groups DO retain, but AFAIK, your allocation for a group is only
some 10Meg, though I may be wrong.
