Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight; Best of 2010?

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...science-space/

"Most annual meteor showers happen when Earth passes through clouds of
debris left behind by passing comets, causing tons of dust to rain down
on the planet in short periods of time.

"The particles of dust—most no bigger than grains of sand—enter Earth’s
atmosphere at high speed, burning up and superheating the air around
them, which then shine with quick streaks of light.

"The Geminids are unusual, though, because they're thought to be the
only annual meteor shower created by an asteroid-like object: 3200
Phaethon".

That likely depends on one's location. No meteor shower will be visible
from the Mid-Atlantic tonight. Snow showers perhaps; meteor showers,
no.

I can assure you, it will still be peaking this evening, whether you can
see it or not! g

If I don't see it it don't happen. I would add, however, that the snow
has stopped--we had about 5 mm--and, while it was too cold for it to
melt, high-winds seem to have blown it away. Tonight is iffy--partly
clear, partly cloudy, snow showers, with temperatures around 20F and
winds of 30-40 mph. If that's the case, I will not see any meteors and
there will have been no meteor shower.

I will check the meteor camera at Cloudbait Zerbat'ry.

I plan on taking a few *short* peeks. My skies are fairly clear - but
it's just too fricking cold for anything longer than a peek.

Saw 3 small ones half an hour ago.
Then took my frozen carcass inside to defrost.

OK, some sucker holes opened up so I jury-rigged a Canon DSL onto my
kit. As I was doing it the sky became opaque again. In the unlikely
event it clears up later I'll have my robotic gear working while I stay
warm inside. I would kick myself if it cleared and I was not ready.

It is very cold out there, though. 22 and steady winds with strong
gusts.

OK, the only way I will see a Geminid is if one punctures the clouds
and crashes through the roof of my house. Good night!

I went out just before midnight eastern time S.E. Michigan. The temp
was 5.1 deg f. I saw five Geminids (maybe a coulple more that I
think I imagained more than saw). The brightest was the first one, it
was nearly as bright as Sirius. The others were much dimmer. I lasted
about 20 minutes. My neck beacme sore before the cold got to me.
