Set it up through Radioshack. $49 down, $49 per month for 2 years. 1-18" dish, 4 receivers. The house was already wired with coax throughout, so the installers job was easy. We're happy with everything so far, get probably around 150 channels including local. Now, don't get me started on the calamity involved with getting Directway Internet satellite connected. Oh man, what a disaster...... Followup set to sci.astro.satellites.visual-observe since that's where I'm at. Actually, I'd be interested in your experience with Directway as in my location it's currently my only option at a high speed connection. Funny too since I live in the middle of the LA suburbs. No cable line on my side of the street and the cable company won't run a cable for one customer. I had not considered wireless, but I'd have to know that the connection is encrypted to prevent mobile sniffers from gaining access to my data stream. Yes, I'm paranoid. Brian |

Hey Brian. Well, its been over a month and still not Directway satellite. They installed a large pole (3" dia) on the roof and a couple of coaxs hanging down to the ground. I've called them several times but they keep putting people on the phone that don't speak english, and no one knows whats going on, and then they place me on hold for 15 mins. arrrgh I tried to call them yesterday and cancel but was told I had to wait 30 mins to speak with a representative. As of yet they haven't extracted any money from my bank account. Today I found a guy in a city 30 miles from here that will gladly install Starband early next week. He said he also installs Directway stuff, but they are going down. Their technology is flawed. So, I gave him my card number and set the deal, at least he spoke english and didn't put me on hold. This time next week, he assured me, I will be crusing the web like 4 m.f. I can't wait to tell this dialup to stick it where the sun don't shine. Where are you at in LA? I used to live in Lomita and Torrance, used to hang at the Strand, worked at Martin-Marrietta on Western Av. That was long, long ago, when I was a young buck. |

Can't get on at all some days. Poor dialup and poor phone lines. Thanks Sprint. Check out Starband if you get the chance. They are based on a technology developed in Israel and they stay on top of it. I can't really give a recommendation at this point as it hasn't been installed yet, but I am optomistic. I ventured up that way once, went to Knotts Berry Farm, saw Chuck Berry play & do his *chicken walk*, back in 1980. Best, Don |
