Default BBC 'Green Room' Article on Light Pollution

Just to let people know, the current 'Green Room' article on the
BBC News web site is about light pollution. There is a link to it
at the bottom of the 'Have Your Say' page where you can add
comments.

Indeed.

I must admit, I'd never really experienced a dark sky until we went to
Richelieu in France last month. It was amazing!

The number of stars visible even in the middle of the fireworks display
(yeah, really!) exceeded anything I'd ever seen in Britain.

The city's lights were extinguished after about 01.30 local time and the
subsequent skyscape was phenomenal.

I think we'll be misled by spurious 'safety' and 'security' arguments
for a long time yet.

Who's going to the CfDS Conference in Portsmouth? David & I are, but
will also be attending musical events in Portsmouth.

The 'safety' and 'security' arguments play on two basic human emotions:
fear and ignorance. The public is constantly being manipulated by the
media to maximize their response to both and the crime prevention
lobby feeds on their reaction. I cannot see a way out of this vicious
circle until the government comes off the fence and produces an
authoritative edict to curb light pollution.

Their last effort is frankly too diluted to have any effect at all
(clean neighbourhood act).
