The German physicist Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen, who
discovered X-rays in 1895 and initiated a scientific
revolution in doing so, refused to apply for any patents in
connection with the discovery or to make any financial gain
out of it. But if virtue is its own reward, it is sometimes its
only reward, for Roentgen, despite winning the very first
Nobel Prize for physics in 1901 for his feat, died a poor
man...
