Default Sunrise / sunset times

How can a person compute sunrise / sunset times?

Do not refer me to software. I am not asking how a machine can compute
sunrise / sunset times. I am asking how I can.

With software. ;-)

So go out and purchase Astronomical Algorithms by Jean
Meeus, or Practical Astronomy with Your Calculator,
or Practical Astronomy with Your Personal Computer
by Peter Duffett-Smith. You'll find the requisite
formulae contained therein.

By the way, machines use the same formulae.

I would recommend the publications by Jean Meeus available from Willmann-
Bell. Everything you did and even did not want to know:

http://www.willbell.com/math/mc1.htm
http://www.willbell.com/math/mc3.htm
http://www.willbell.com/math/mc4.htm

Also recommended:

http://www.willbell.com/math/MC18.htm

Klazmon.
