Default aastex citation help

Hi All,

I'm trying to have aastex switch to abbreviated citation after the
first occurance. Let me elaborate:

The first citation, for eg.

\citep[hereafter BG89]{bell}

would appear as "(Bell and Gustafsson 1989, hereafter BG89)

where the bibliographic entry is

\bibitem[Bell and Gustafsson (1989)]{bell} stuff..

I'd like to be able to make subsequent refences to cite "bell" print
as just BG89 so that

\citep{bell}

would appear as just "BG89"

What is the syntax in bibitem that would allow this? If not is there a
way to hack it using counters?

Cheers,
John

When I was in grad school, Ivan King was my guide to all matters
fussy and pedantic (and those who know me will know that I mean that
as a compliment). He said that the correct word in this
context was "hereinafter," not "hereafter."
