Default easy question from a newbie

I know hardly anything about Astronomy - so forgive the stupid question
but...

What is that very bright object currently(yesterday) to the right of the
moon and which, along with the moon, is the first thing to appear in the
night sky?

Yep, it's Venus.

Also just after sunset, take a look in the sky about 1/2 way between Venus
and where the sun set. If you're lucky you might see mercury.

Colin.
