Default [fitsbits] ADASS FITS BoF on Sunday

ADASS 2004 FITS BoF on Sunday Afternoon
---------------------------------------

The FITS Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) session at this year's ADASS meeting in
Pasadena will be held earlier than usual, on Sunday October 24th from 4:30
to 6:00 pm (i.e., shortly before the opening reception). I hope many of
will be able to attend.

This BoF session will present a summary of current activities in the FITS
user community and will provide a forum for the discussion of current
issues. The tentative agenda is:

* Recent changes to the IAU and Regional FITS committees and
their membership
* Overview of new streamlined approval procedures for FITS proposals
* Status of current FITS proposals
- FITS MIME types
- World Coordinate Systems Papers III and IV
- TDIMn and Variable Length array conventions for binary tables
* Ideas for establishing a registry for FITS conventions
* The role of FITS in the VO era: are any changes desired?
* Open forum for short presentations on FITS topics by attendees
- Simple Imaging Polynomial (SIP) representation of distortions
- any other topics

Please let me know if you have ideas for other topics (regardless of
whether you plan to attend the meeting).

I shall not be at ADASS, unfortunately, but one topic raised on this list
recently is of interest to me: whether we can overcome the limits implied
by 32-bit integers.

With the help of Bill and his colleagues at GSFC I was able to build a
version of cFITSIO which handled files of over 2 GB, but I think a 2
gigarow limit in tables may be enforced by the presence of implicitly
32-bit signed integers for NAXIS2 (etc.) in the headers. It would be
interesting to know whether any other people have an interest in extending
FITS beyond the 32-bit limit, and whether they have ideas to help solve
it.

Regards
