You're presumably thinking of Yucca Mountain. *That isn't why it was
'abandoned' (and in fact it is still funded).

the only funding for yucca is security. its a attractive nuisance sort
of place.

all the equiptement including the lights were removed, most entrances
sealed, just some hardened doors for access.

and the area is geologically unstable over millions of years.

they really need to move most nuke waste to dry cask storage to avoid
storage pool fires which occured in japan and non hardened storage
pools with 40 years of waste make excellent terrorist targets.

i think they should move all old waste to dry cask storage and take it
all to yucca for temporary storage.
