Hi All:

Just heard news the Chinese have launched about 30 min ago. None
of the ephem services list it yet. Too bad I did not generate a fake set.
Anybody know if the initial ground track takes it near the U.S. West
Coast?

Yeah, it was on my clock radio this morning as it clicked on for the
7am news. Well done China, and welcome to human space flight.

They kept very quiet about their plans while they were carrying them
out. They were worried about the political consequences of failure.
Of course, they may also be worried about sabatoge by the West!
Evidence exists that indicate US may have had a hand in the demise of
the N1 and its designer back in the 60s. The spate of Long-March
failures when China bid for commercial launch business may have also
been viewed suspiciously by the Chinese.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to contemplate what the Chinese might
do - now that they have everything in place.

With 4.8 ton payload to orbit

the rocket could put up a gemini equivalent vehicle.

Gemini was proposed as a low-cost lunar lander...

Three Long March rockets could place into orbit the three components
of the Gemini SRS - they would then dock together and proceed to the
moon and back to Earth!

The Chinese may be closer to lunar travel than we think!

If they achieve a lunar landing they may reignite a space race with
the US.

But, given the poor history of the Shuttle, and our present
involvement with our war on Terror and its eventual economic
consequences - maybe a Chinese landing on the moon wouldn't reignite a
space race.

Of course the US could handily end all argument by opening the
development of space to humanity - by changing its laws regarding
space based assets and resources - providing tax credits for space
development, and releasing technical data along with weapons materials
in support of a privatized ORION style interplanetary rocket;

industrial development for humanity.

You're kidding. Shenzhou as it is currently designed is more like a
highly-modernized version of the Soyuz spacecraft--which is way ahead of the
Gemini design. The fact Shenzhou has electrical and life support for flights
over seven days tells me it could be used for Moon missions further down the
road.

However, until the Chinese "man-rate" the Long March 3B(A) design, you can
forget about China attempting a trip to the Moon (at least for a one trip
around the Moon circumlunar flight).

Your point being?

You have a unique way of insulting people.

I'll take that as a compliment.

The general gist of this thread is that some people believe that the
Chinese launch could spur another space race of some sort, and that
this would result in more money for government space (ie NASA), and
that this would be a good thing.

I would submit that anyone who believes that more money for NASA is a
good thing, from the perspective of one who wants us to get off this
planet, has simply not paid attention to recent events.

Why do you find this to be a good feature of your personality and revel in
it?

You're certainly intelligent enough to discuss things without resorting to
rather silly insults, so why do you insist on doing it?

There's a saying in the south, that, sometime, a man needs killin'.

Sometimes, people need insulting.

That would probably be why most of my friends in CA and WA think the South
needs to be detached from the rest of the USA.

Sometimes, people need insulting.

Umm... no, not really.

Well, sometimes, but not nearly as often.

Well, actually, people probably need insulting more often than they
need killin'.
