SpaceX First Pacific Island orbital launch?
SpaceX First Pacific Island orbital launch? Re the expected SpaceX orbital launch of 'Falcon-1' from Kwajelain about December 19 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/falcon...211update.html), is this the first-ever orbital launch from a Pacific island? There have been launches from Pacific rim coastal sites, and from aircraft based in California out over the ocean, and of course from the 'Sea Launch' ship. But from any island? I can't think of any but these days that's no historical proof! grin Jim O |

Johnston Island has launched numerous sub-orbital flights, some with apogees up to 1,000 km. Live nuclear armed missiles have also been launched and detonated. But no orbital flights have been launched from there. http://www.astronautix.com/sites/johsland.htm Rusty |

The Pegasus launch aircraft operated from Kwajalein for the 9 Oct 2000 launch of HETE 2. Other than that, if you don't consider Japan to be Pacific islands :-), I can't think of any. -- spsystems.net is temporarily off the air; | Henry Spencer mail to henry at zoo.utoronto.ca instead. | |

If you count the runway as the "launch" site, then the Kwaj runway hosted a space launch when Orbital's L1011 lifted off with a Pegasus carrying NASA's HETE-2 . - Ed Kyle |

SpaceX NOT First Kwaj orbital launch

the sort of thing I had forgotten!! "Henry Spencer" wrote in message ...
