asteroid hits sun
Was there ever an observation of an asteroid-impact into the sun?
What's the minimum size of an asteroid for an impact (smaller ones break up or melt) into the sun? Are sunspots related to impacts in any way? With friendly greetings Hero |

QuickTime Animation of Two Comets Hitting Sun http://www.grandunification.com/hype...arImpacts.html What's the minimum size of an asteroid for an impact (smaller ones break up or melt) into the sun? I doubt there's anything smaller than a planet that can survive plunging into the solar atmosphere for more than a few seconds. Are sunspots related to impacts in any way? No. Yousuf Khan |

Anything else would be a meteor (excluding comets, moons, planets etc.) but to answer your question, yes, lots of objects fall into the Sun as Soho shows. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/galle...es/comets.html |

Incidentally, this is the size of Mercury compared to some sunspots: http://tinyurl.com/npynu4 http://thebigfoto.com/wp-content/upl...ry-transit.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Mercury What would happen if two stars collided? http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0203/sn1987a_hst.jpg I'd suggest the dual nature of the rings is the result of a collision of two stars rather than a single star exploding spontaneously. It's not an event that happens often, but there are so many stars it would be strange indeed if it never happened at all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgg2tpUVbXQ |

Are sunspots related to impacts in any way? Think about that for a momemnt. Sunspot numbers are cyclical over an approximately 11 year period. How could impacts behave in such a way? Sunspot magnetic polarities reverse every 11 years, creating a 22 year solar cycle. How could impacts cause such behavior? Sunspot latitudes start high and migrate toward lower latitudes over the course of a solar cycle. How could impact locations behave in such a way? If you're starting to think that they can't be related, you're starting to think the right way. |

Wait a minute, this is a picture of SN 1987A, one of the most famous supernovas in history. It's definitely a supernova. Besides two stars merging would be basically like a two blobs of oil merging in a lava lamp. It'll create a bigger blob, but it won't explode. Yousuf Khan |

Boringly stupid is the most common cause of kill-filing, but because this message is generic the other reasons have been included. You are left to decide which is most applicable to you. There is no appeal, I have despotic power over whom I will electronically admit into my home and you do not qualify as a reasonable person I would wish to converse with or even poke fun at. Some weirdoes are not kill- filed, they amuse me and I retain them for their entertainment value as I would any chicken with two heads, either one of which enables the dumb bird to scratch dirt, step back, look down, step forward to the same spot and repeat the process eternally. This should not trouble you, many of those plonked find it a blessing that they are not required to think and can persist in their bigotry or crackpot theories without challenge. You have the right to free speech, I have the right not to listen. The kill-file will be cleared annually with spring cleaning or whenever I purchase a new computer or hard drive. I hope you find this explanation is satisfactory but even if you don't, damnly my frank, I don't give a dear. Have a nice day. |
