Default Newbie seeking help!

Hi, just a short post here......im new to astronomy and need some help.
what equipment would i need to view nebuale and other deep sky objects other
than the stars you view with naked eyes. I have seen many colour photos on
net and in books and gather you need some video camare or long exposure film
to do this, is this correct? also any websites on where in the sky i will
find the obersvable planets are...im pretty good with contelations but have
no idea when it comes to planets. any help would be greatly
appreciated...myles

Hi Myles

The FAQ for this group is a good place to start

http://www.astronomycentre.org.uk/UKSA/faq.htm

You can see Nebulae and other DSO with your eyes and telescope (or even some
of the brighter ones with binoculars) but you will only really see colours
in images. Astro Imaging can be a tricky (and potentially expensive)
business though and probably not the best place for a beginner to start.

Check out my web page for information about what can be seen with various
sizes / types of scopes.

This really depends on your definition of "good". Some people find the
Synta ones acceptable for their needs. You can go to
http://www.opticalvision.co.uk/ to find your local dealers. You can
expect to pay about £580 with mount but no drives. Add about £100 for
drives.

Synta refractors can be improved by the addition of a Chromacorr:
http://www.apm-telescopes.de/englisc...chromacorr.htm

A truly good 6" refractor will cost you £5000 or more for the optical
tube assembly alone, and nearly as much again for a mount that will
enable you to exploit its potential. I suspect that this is not what you
are looking for, but do correct me if I am wrong.

and how much im looking at spending?
thanks

Best,
Stephen
