Apparently something we do not understand, and have not yet
identified, lurks throughout the cosmos.

Read all about it:

For a popular, press-release style description, this is quite good. I
know four of the authors personally and have no reason to doubt that
this is a real discovery.

This might be a bit more interesting than usual, but it is really
bread-and-butter science. Many, if not most, scientists (at least in
pure research) in their day-to-day work deal with things we do not
understand. In fact, one could almost define science as the process by
which we learn to understand things which we did not understand. Also,
it is often the case that something is first discovered via some sort of
radiation (essentially all that astronomers have to work with) and only
later (though perhaps quite quickly, in some cases) does a theoretical
model emerge---pulsars and QSOs are obvious examples.

So, yes, interesting and perhaps more intriguing than most such
discoveries, but nothing really bizarre.

A succinct and very accessible review of the current
situation regarding fast radio bursts.
