Default First attempt at Mars picture

Folks

I managed to get a picture of Mars for the first time.
I took the picture at around 2 am on 15th July 2003.
I used a SAC7 CCD camera, an Orion Optics Europa 200 (f/6 version) + a x2
Barlow lens, and stacked the image using K3CCD Tools.
You can see the image on the planets page at my web site
http://www.r.i.taylor.btinternet.co.uk/planets.htm

The seeing was not great, since Mars was fairly low in the sky. Any comments
welcome

Ian

Some nice images there! I have been having a stab at Mars myself (before
the enevitable global dust storm kicks in).

Thanks for your message.
I couldn't see your pictures since I was denied access to the singastro
group (!). Do you have them on an alternative web site ?
Thanks

Hi Ian,
From your very decent Jupiter and Saturn pics, I can surmise that you can
definitely do much better for your attempt on Mars if you waited for it

to
move higher up in the sky.
I tried Jupiter and Mars but got very bad pics for Jup and Saturn but

still
manage with Mars (albeit not much detail).
Check out my attempts here :

Pics were taken on my ETX105EC using a Nikon digital camera..

Good luck on your following attempts!

Hi,
I have uploaded my images (low res to conserve space) here instead:

Do check it out..they're not very good, I'm afraid but then again, I'm using
a 4" scope only!

cheers and clear skies

Size doesn't matter ;-)

I'm using a 4" with my digicam. Take a look at my website (sig.) -
click on the composite picture at the top of the front page.

I've found that taking movies and stacking them is producing better
results for me than taking still images.

Last night (morning of the 28th) actually gave me some time to gather
data. From initial looks, the results look promising.

Basically, I took a shed load of MOVs (limited to 320x240 43s max
duration) and a rather laborious set of 100 640x480 resolution images
which I'm planning to pass through Registax tonight. I'll post the
images as soon as I'm happy with the results.

So I've noticed [continues hunting for inexpensive but good digicam with
movie mode].

I was out from about 3am. There were moments of decent seeing and Mars
was momentarily showing a lot of detail once the scope had cooled down
(dawn already well underway), but the image was literally dancing around
the LCD. I took about 150 frames and only kept *5* of them!

Best,
Stephen
