Default A Note on Chinese Optical Industry from today's L.A. Times

"Len Chaloux, an executive at Moore Nanotechnology Systems, a New
Hampshire producer of machine tools to produce optical lenses, said
his firm lost a $500,000 deal after it took more than five months to
get a visa for the Chinese customer. He said it was "extremely
frustrating" because his firm's chief British competitor had landed at
least 15 contracts in China, the world's hottest market for optical
technology equipment."

L.A. Times, 6/2/04, story headline: Visa Delays Cost Firms $31
Billion, Survey Says

I am not sure what you are getting at here. Is this about telescopes or
optics in general?
The optical industry spans much.

Tha manufacture of telescopes is part of the optical industry.
Chinese-made telescopes and binoculars are quite inexpensive relative
to their quality. They are obviously making large investments in the
latest optical technology. Seems to me there's a clear connection.

I wonder if lower priced semi-APO's or APO's are going to be produced by
the Chinese. So far achromats are their only products in refractors.

The Orion ED80 has shown that the Chinese can produce a decent scope what
offers APO level performance. And Celetron has recently announced some ED
refractors. Whether the ED80 is an anomoly or the first wave of a flood is
difficult to know.

I sure hope that ED lenses can be bought separately at sometime from the
Chinese. I would
like to make my own sometime.

Two would make a great pair of binos with right angle mirrors
for astronomical use. You could finally use decent astronomical
eyepieces that don't start to blur 1/3 out of the centre of the field
of view like most bino eyepieces. Why pay $600/pair for Fujinons when
you could assemble a set that would kick their a-- out of the apos?

You mean someday their mirrors and such will make the grade?

Guan Sheng produced primary mirrors already match, or in the opinions
of some, surpass the mirrors supplied by Discovery telescopes
manfactured in USA.

Guess what, theyre cheaper too :-)

The new Celestron dobsonians will be sporting Guan Sheng produced
primary mirrors.

Do you count Taiwan as being Chinese?
