Very interesting essay -- thanks for the link.

Those last few paragraphs really crystallize the attraction of SaH:

"Still, I want the adventure to continue, and to be part of it.

"So, SETI@home is back on my computer, silently poring over
mathematical stuff I'll never understand.

"I'm happy to have it there. It represents that exquisitely tiny
possibility that tomorrow something truly amazing might happen.

"And no tropical fishtank can offer that."
