ASTRO: Arp 32 -- UGC 10770
Returning temporarily to Arp galaxies. This is classified in Arp's list
as an integral sign galaxy. Actually it is two galaxies in the process of colliding. There's a foreground star at the apparent collision point making a false nucleus. While it may appear that these are very distant galaxies that would be wrong. They are only about 55 million light years away. So they are both very small dwarf galaxies. Seeing wasn't all that good for this image as the jet stream had moved into its overhead summer position. Though of late it has moved away again but was overhead when this was taken unfortunately. Still it doesn't compare too poorly to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey image of it at: http://cas.sdss.org/dr6/en/tools/places/page5.asp It's the third one down in the left column. Due to the use of photometric filters the colors are rather garish. Clouds cut the image short after only one round of color data but it seems to have been enough. These two are rather bright and should be visible in my 14" visually (barely) but I didn't try so can't say for sure. They are listed at 14.5 and 14.9 magnitude in red light. Since they are blue that should mean they are easier to see than that. Anyone tried for these? I found only a couple amateur shots of this guy listed by Google, none in color. 14" LX200R @ F/10, L=6x10' RGB=1x10' binned 3x3, STL-11000XM, Paramount ME Rick -- Correct domain name is arvig and it is net not com. Prefix is correct. Third character is a zero rather than a capital "Oh". |
