There are two ways that could happen:
1. Wait 1000 years.
2. The dollar could lose 90% of its value.

The second may actually happen, but it would be strongly disruptive. Your
salary would be worth less in terms of buying power.

You continue with the same nonsense that defines liberal democrats
as extreme left wingers and then tries to tag the leading Democrats
with that label.

It's not too hard. The current leading Democrat is John Kerry. You
know, the same guy who worked wholeheartedly with Jane Fonda, the SDS
and VVAW to end containment of Communism. The same guy that wrote a
book calling for the end of ANY support to the South Vietnamese
government, even as China and the USSR ramped up military support for
Ho Chi Min. Kerry's call was eventually answered, ensuring a communist
victory in South Vietnam that killed more South Vietnamese in
communist purges than died on both sides during the thirteen year
civil war.

In the 1960s, his position was considered extreme. It wasn't until
after the '68 Chicago riots at the Democratic convention that groups
like SDS gained control of the party of Jefferson.

You call that nonsense?

You are more likely to find them at colleges than in politics,
with a few exceptions.

Tom Daschle, Terry McCauliff, Nancy Pelosi, Al Gore, Howard Dean, John
Kerry, sadly, Ted Kennedy as well. . . plus a lot others.

Sort of like the number of extreme conservatives in the
Republican party, except they are more likely to hang out
at country clubs than colleges.

Country clubs? You mean the kind that only megamillionaires like John
Kerry, John Edwards, Ted Kennedy hang out at? or do you mean the kind
I play golf at once a week for $40 a round? That's the average
Republican, unfortunately for Democrats. Somebody who doesn't feel bad
about earning $50,000 a year and playing golf once a week. Sounds an
awful lot like the average guy...

But you are making an assumption that Moon+Mars was in fact
anything more than a disguised campaign speech.

To think otherwise is laughable. Where is the big constituency for
going to the moon and Mars whose votes Bush is seeking?

I think China's long term efforts in space will have a serious effect
on the US government's plans to continue, or discontinue the Bush plan.

No reason to think that, and if they have any affect, it won't be for
many years.

Don't be too sure about that. I do not think Kerry would exert himself too
much to pass regulatory or tax incentives for private space travel. Also, he
is quite capable of forbidding travel to the Moon or Mars out of
environmental reasons.

Bush, on the other hand, would find it completely reasonable to ban private launchers in the name of Homeland Security. And under
Bush II there soon wouldn't be any government launches: with a borrow-and-spend Republican Congress the US would soon be bankrupt.

My knolwedge of their reconstruction is pretty slight, but primarily
it must have been themselves...

There was massive US aid for the reconstruction of both Europe and Japan.
Read up on, most notably, the Marshall Plan sometime.

It was seen as a farsighted long-term investment that would help produce
stable, prosperous, friendly countries (and, not incidentally, open up new
markets for US goods and help contain Communism)... as opposed to what
happened in Europe after WWI, when instability, poverty, and misery played
into the hands of the Communists, the Fascists, and the Nazis.

The Wall Street Journal has dug up some people who still care about that
issue, but I think it's a fairly small number. If the ruler of North Korea
decided to fight SARS, would you turn around and support SARS? So Kerry
agreed with Jane Fonda on some issue. So what?

If I remember correctly, Kerry didn't get out of the military and start
protesting until 1972. By then it was pretty much a done deal. McGovern
opposed the war and Kissinger wanted his Nobel peace prize. At one time, I
was a hawk, but Nixon failed to win the war and we couldn't keep beating our
heads against the wall for no reason. Even though I was a hawk, I voted for
McGovern -- mainly because of the Watergate issue.

I like the country club set. It's mainly the religious right that bugs
me -- especially the people who believe that the Earth is less than 10,000
years old.
