Why Seven Pleiades?

Your question deserves an actual viewing, which hazy skies and
near-full moon have made impossible for me the last few days.

The likely candidates appear to be:

28 Tauri (Pleione) at mag 5.04
27 Tauri (Atlas) at mag 3.61
25 Tauri (Alcyone) at mag 2.84
23 Tauri (Merope) at mag 4.16
20 Tauri (Maia) at mag 3.86
19 Tauri (Taygeta) at mag 4.28
17 Tauri (Electra) at mag 3.68
16 Tauri (Celaeno) at mag 5.45

One factor besides magnitude should be mentioned - 28 is very
close to 27 in angular displacement, and some viewers may not
see these as two separate stars.

That being said, four natural viewer groupings fall out easily.

6 (or fewer) - Those who see six are probably seeing
27, 25, 23, 20, 19, and 17.
7 (Pleione) - Those who have good angular resolution may see
28, 27, 25, 23, 20, 19, and 17.
7 (Celaeno) - Those who have good low light sensitivity may see
27, 25, 23, 20, 19, 17, and 16.
8 (or more) - Those who have both good angular resolution and
good low light sensitivity probably see the whole list.

I fall into one of the 7 groups, and cannot honestly tell you
from memory which one. I plan to follow up with a viewing when
skies permit.
