What IS Hardin these days? Their website is weird. It's like a clearance
center. I don't even want to get into Meade---plastic over-priced CATS.
Whoopeeee!

Given Celestron being absorbed into a larger company (sorry don't recall
which) I wasn't that surprised. Seeing TeleVue being sold by Orion
(again IIRC) did surprise me. Can't think that their other dealers will
be too happy with that decision.

You do know that 7 or so years ago Orion sold most if not all of TV line
as well as other big names.

Do I know that (what like in a biblical way or something)? No. As I
said I recall that Orion used to sell TeleVue, but I could be wrong. I
don't archive Orion catalogs. Musta been a customer though, because I
have a nine year old pair of binos from them (8x56, still love them).

Hi:

Orion has never had a brand. Not if you mean "scopes produced
in-house." In the good old days of the 80s, they sold some Orion
branded and even made stuff...largely small things like drive
correctors and other accessories, but mainly scopes from the majors,
including Meade, Celestron, etc. As far as scopes go, they have never
made a thing. The "Orion brand" was initially Vixen, and then Synta--in
a big way. ;-)

Peace,
Rod Mollise

Their first dobs were made by Pirate.

Hello everyone
This is the official response I got from Orion about the issue:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Our decision to offer some
of Celestron's products was based on our desire to round out our overall
product offering and meet the needs of some of our customers. We believe
that the quality, dependability and features of these Celestron products
will be a great addition to our own product line. Please be assured that
you will also continue to see newly developed products in the Orion
product line. Again, we appreciate your comments.

If there is anything further that we may assist you with please contact us.

Sincerely,
Orion Telescopes and Binoculars

Orion used to offer a much larger and more high-end product line. They even
used to sell Televue scopes and eyepieces. They are now catering more to the
low-end and entry-level product.

Biblical? Since they sold TV before I just didn't understand your surpise.
I guess it's true about history repeating itself.

As far as catalogs, nor do I archive so my date might be wrong but I'm
sure somebody in SAA land could be more definite?

The Orion store has been carrying Celestron gear for quite some time
now, about
2 years. They're now also carrying TeleVue gear. Check their web
page:

for additional surprises.

What's your point? Antares sells a lot of Chinese stuff.

The Orion SCT's are being made by Celestron in the U.S. as mentioned in
Orion's description of the product: "It features 8"-diameter,
hand-figured optics crafted in the USA by Celestron, and StarBright XLT
high-performance multi-coatings."

Synta is not making Celestron's high-end SCT's (at least not for the
time being). According to our Celestron rep, Celestron is still making
the optics in California but some of the other components of the scope
are being produced by Synta and shipped to California for final
assembly.

On a side note, Meade also produces their high-end SCT optics in
California.
