From the article:

Below is SpaceX's statement regarding the workforce reduction,
emailed to me by spokesman John Taylor in the wee hours of
July 26 CET:

"There was an annual review cycle completed recently, along
with some rebalancing of resources. Our resulting headcount
reduction was less than 5%. SpaceX expects to see net-positive
employee growth in 2014 of approximately 20%."

A bit disappointing to hear they let some employees go, but since they
plan to see a net positive growth in 2014, it's not all bad news.
Reorganizations like this aren't uncommon in engineering.

"the perennial claim that hypersonic airbreathing propulsion would
magically make space launch cheaper is nonsense -- LOX is much cheaper
than advanced airbreathing engines, and so are the tanks to put it in
and the extra thrust to carry it." - Henry Spencer

Yes. Sometimes this is just media spin, i.e. generate a headline to get clicks.
There were to ways AvWeek could have framed this same story:

1. SpaceX sees 5% workforce reduction. (really?)
2. SpaceX projects 20% net workforce growth in 2014. (business as usual ho-hum)

Bad news sells.

Dave
